Brilliant, Brilliant place. Great to do something hands on...well kind of..to have a product to take away. It's a shame its only open on a Saturday to the public now...perhaps one evening a week would be nice? The staff are so friendly, I was a bit worried as I'm a bit rusty on design skills after a few years from college but I was made to feel at ease. Back to the drawing board for my new project. Thank you !

Laser cutting is something I am exploring here. A great place for creative minds with helping staff. Missing Tony, who was a great mentor in Fablab earlier.

With plenty of help from simon this slightly ambitious first time project worked really well. Big thanks to Tony too. Just got to finish the sanding and I will be back to make the table!

really productive with the laser cutter last week, got everything I wanted laser cutting. There needs to be improvements made as far as booking is concerned, too many users go beyond and eat into the hour that I have booked, 10 minutes into someone's hour is OK but beyond that is not acceptable.

The cnc machine that I am currently working on, and as an interior design project has been a bit of an up Hill struggle. And without the assistance of Tony Terry, I'd really struggle. I am happy with the quarter scal model of a screen I am making, and it is slowly being realised. I will be booking on a workshop for this particular machine at the end of the month. In the mean time I have sourced outside assistance to improve my skills. Looking forward to getting the screen up, and other accessories in the near future...before winter would be good.

very good, really helpful staff who devote their time to making sure you know what you are doing and want done to your laser cut work. To improve I would give longer time to anyone who has a lot of designs/work to laser cut.

Quite a few factors have slowed the planned work down considerably. My own learning has been slow, I have identified someone outside Fablab, who is willing to give me additional time in learning the theoretical side of the CNC machine. I am also planning to book onto the shopbot workshop at the end of the month. The computing directions, and in terms of its first cutting paths are starting to drill way before they are supposed to. This technical fault has occurred twice, and prevented the sample pieces from being completed. Hopefully this issue has been resolved, and the samples can be completed. I will be working on the real project today and tomorrow.

This is the third time that I have been able to get onto the CNC machine. The first time this happened I booked the appointment for 3 hours starting at 1.00pm. I was 10 minutes late, rang fablab to let them know this. Someone else was using the machine, I asked one of the staff members about this he confirmed that it was 75% through the job. This job didn't come off and until 2.15pm, and it wasn't until 3.30pm that I was asked if I wanted to use the machine. There would have only been an hour, which wouldn't have been long enough. And I was aware that if I started the job I wouldn't have finished until 7.00pm. The second time related to not being told that the machine was out of use. I originally gave full contact details at the start of my induction, and have made fablab aware of delays. And would automatically expect the same. I'd booked the following day to find that I wasn't booked onto the CNC at all. I spoke to the staff members about this, and there hopefully will be some sort of resolve this week.

My over standing of the CNC machine, has greatly improved as I am now retaining information, and through repitative discourse. I am interested in developing the skills through 3 d applications now, and which include a more sculptural approach to new and continued projects.

After working on the CNC machine, and in just less than 3 consecutive weekends. I'm starting to appreciate the process. I do feel I need to go on the CNC workshop as it will give me time to jot information down, rather than the other way around. I still need to work on the drill bit sizes and what they do, and how they work with the different woods/plywoods (and metals) provided. I am using the 15 mm plywood at the moment and finding that it is bowed, and therefore not cutting through the wood properly. This delays the process considerably because instead of going onto the next piece, I'm having to retrace my steps. I could do with a manual to prepare and plan prior to cutting the project out. This would be very useful in my own learning development.

Cutting out unaided, and this time around on the CNC cutter. One hiccup is that the back of the equipment attached to the tube which vacuums the plywood dust was lower than the drill bit. This caused the back end of this equipment to scrape across the piece being cut out. The butterfly screw at the back of the vacuum lifted up and that problem was then sorted out. There's a lot of warping, which is showing inconsistency of outlines ready to be cut. I don't know whether it has something to do with this particular plywood, or the drill bit. It is now cutting out fine.

In my own learning I have identified that I am a visual learner, particularly when it comes to viewing each planned layer on the CNC table. It's becoming a bit more revealing and in understanding what the drill bits, are doing and used for. And how they work in terms of bevelling and cutting. I am currently working with a stained Vermeer ply, which is 15 mm.

I'm really getting to grips with the shop bot, and I am really enjoying the processes involved. The need to use my time much more productively, and when it comes to layouts, instructions for the machine is apparent.

I am slowly getting to grips with the processes needed for safety, and making sure that the cnc machine is cutting at the accurate levels. I am still getting my head around the drill bits, dimensions and when applying this to the revs per minute (I will need to do some serious practice with that one). I used the vinyl cutter last week, and this was a great machine to use and operate. Thank you for all the supportive help so far fab lab team of Altrincham...

I have been looking for a place to unleash my creativity, and found it in Fablab Altrincham. The high tech industrial standard pieces of equipment, gives scope for applying creative processes. From really small projects, to huge stage props and other stuff in the middle.

Fablab is a fantastic place to learn new things! It is super exciting to be able to use machines and technology that generally are not accessible or affordable. The team are super friendly and supportive too.
